FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How long have you been photographing weddings?

A: I have been photographing weddings since 2002. I got my start assisting a local wedding photographer.

Q: How did you learn the art of photography?

A: I went to Boston University to study photojournalism. While I was still in college, I went and applied for a job with a local wedding photographer. He hired me to assist him with weddings and taught me about lighting, posing the subjects, and making an album. I worked with him while I was trying to branch out on my own. After graduating college, I started working with a newspaper. All along I've pushed myself to learn new techniques by working on personal projects, staying involved in online photography communities, attending lectures, workshops and seminars, and reading plenty of magazines and books.

Q: What style of photography do you apply to photographing weddings?

A: I use a mix of styles to capture the look and feel of your big day. Everything from traditional wedding formals and poses, to the photojournalist approach of capturing candid moments, and high fashion/lifestyle images. If you have a preference for one type of photos, please let me know, so I can try to concentrate on taking those types of photos.

Q: Do you do photograph other events other than weddings?

A: Yes, I am capable of photographing any event you have, including bar or bat mitzvahs, wedding rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, family portraits, engagement photos, pregnancy photos, baby photos, corporate events, charity events, and more.

Q: Why do some of my photos that I ordered look a little different than the ones in my proof album?

A: Proof images are 4" x 6" which makes use of the entire photo. An 8" x 10" photograph and a 5" x 7" photograph both have different aspect ratios from the original 4" x 6", therefore the images must be cropped. For example, an 8" x 10" would be like a 4" x 5" image or conversely a 4" x 6" would be an 8" x 12".

Q: Can I order reprints?

A: Of course, check the pricing page for the cost of reprints.

Q: My friend [aunt, cousin, brother] owns a professional digital camera that takes great pictures, why should I hire a professional photographer?

A: The difference between a professional and someone with a professional camera is immense. A professional photographer knows all about lighting, composition, and how to make you look your best in each image. A professional photographer has the experience and knows how to anticipate the great moments which make for beautiful memories and photographs. Hiring a professional puts you at ease knowing that you'll have a great quality wedding album and that you will receive it in a timely manner. Remember, the photographs are going to be the only thing you'll really hold on to and look at time and again after the wedding. They will form part of the memories and how you perceive your wedding day. You want to have the best memories and therefore the best photos for your wedding day.

Q: I'm trying to save money on my wedding, but wedding photography is so expensive. What can I do?

A: Wedding photography is so expensive because photography is a very specialized job that requires a lot of skill and training as well as very expensive equipment. If you are trying to save money on the wedding, I recommend cutting costs elsewhere, because you want to hire the best photographer you can afford. I've heard numerous times from people I know that after their wedding they realized they should have spent more money to hire a good photographer. You only get once chance to create these memories and they are something you will have forever to remind you of how beautiful your day was. The flowers will wilt, the cake will be eaten, and your friends will not mind if you do not have an open bar. You do have to balance the spending a bit. I suggest the areas you spend your money on would be the photography, the location (a beautiful location will help the pictures look that much better), and the dress (you want to look great in your photos).

Q: Do you photograph using film or digital?

A: I photograph using digital. Digital camera quality has come a long way. I've made prints as large as 30" x 40" and I could make them much larger with my new camera! Digital also allows the photographer to see the results of what he or she is doing right away, which frees them up to become more creative. The photographer knows when they've got the basic shots and can then try to experiment with more creative images.

Q: Do you do any retouching on the images? What does retouching cost?

A: Yes, retouching is available. Basic retouching, like color correcting, cropping, and dust removal are free. The more intensive retouching services I have to charge for. Cost is based on the amount of work/time involved. Please note though, that I try my best to make sure that retouching isn't needed.

Q: Why would I want to hire an[y] additional photographer[s]?

A: A wedding day is so full of photographic possibilities it's almost impossible for one photographer to capture them all. Having multiple photographers provides you with the potential to capture more unique candid moments and gives you another view of how the days events were.

Q: How early should I book my photographer?

A: I have a pretty busy schedule and I do the weddings on the side. If you would like to hire me, it's best to do so as soon as possible so I can reserve the date for you. Most wedding photographers are booked about a year in advance though. I probably book most of my between 9 and 12 months in advance.

Q: Do you charge a travel fee?

A: Occasionally, yes. I would need to see the location and date of the wedding in order to figure that out.

Q: Do you photograph same sex weddings?

A: At this point in my career I have not been contacted to do so, but given the opportunity, I would gladly photograph a same sex marriage.

Q: You live in New York now, do you still photograph weddings in Massachusetts?

A: Yes, I have family back in Massachusetts, so I love the opportunity to go home and visit while photographing a wedding.

Q: I have more questions that are not on here. What is the best way to reach you to get answers?

A: Visit the contact page and either give me a call or write me an e-mail.
